Fine, the "highly coveted" title of "most controversial" may be a bit of a misnomer, but Brampton's self esteem is not in great shape right now. We're facing the new challenges of an emerging big city, yet lag behind the rest of the GTA in various aspects of city life. The rush hour commutes in and out of b-town are legendary, yet somehow the population continues to grow at a somewhat alarming rate.
There have been big improvements in infrastructure, public transportation, and heath care. Yet even those high prized improvements have not provided the long term solutions that are needed in Canada's 9th largest city. The city is home to a hard working and diverse populace, but they continue to be let down by those elected to lead. The people of Brampton continue to be hit with high property taxes, high insurance rates, and high-way (410) robbery by their leaders.
Brampton's main leader is The Honourable Mayor Susan Fennell. Please take a give few minutes to ask Jeeves (too soon?) who is Susan Fennell and enjoy a little light reading on her political misadventures of late....there's quite a bit of content.
Here are a few selected lowlights for your consideration:
- Somehow the highest paid mayor in Canada, for Canada's ninth largest city?
- Lead the charge on an expensive yet very secretive city hall expansion.
- Subject of a prolonged improper expense scandal.
- Engaging in lawsuits with various detractors. (oh s**t!)
Admittedly it's not as sordid as an implausibly operatic crack scandal in Toronto (it ain't over till the fat man sings! #FordNation), and yes, ostensibly nobody cares about Brampton politics. But in terms of -straight up, ol' fashioned, freedom, equality, god bless America keep our land/glorious and free, Canadian style- democracy, this is an embarrassment. The mayor has got to go! She's been in the game since '88 and mayor since 2000. No doubt there were some good years in there. We thank you for your contributions to the city and selfless public service... but, I still really think it's time we see other people.
In exception to really special cases, I don't think good leaders should stay more than 3 terms in office. With so much power for too long of a time, its inevitable you lose perspective of the ideas and needs of your constituents and grow complacent. Sometimes this occurs due to cynicism, other times as a means to retain power. Either way, change is the only necessary remedy to such an unfortunate scenario. Fortunately we live in a democratic society and we have the regular opportunity to choose our leaders in free, safe and fair elections. The beauty of this moment, right now, is that municipal elections are about 30 days away! All over Ontario, the people will have a chance to pick new leaders or continue to renew the services of their incumbents. This is a fantastic opportunity for Brampton to embrace real change for the first time in a very long time. Finally shedding the small town mentality, and taking those small steps and giant leaps towards the future of a sustainable prosperous city.
Ms. Fennell still believes she is capable to lead the future of Brampton, and has officially kicked of a defiant re-election campaign to win the hearts and minds of Brampton voters. As unlikely as it seems, Ms. Fennell is confident in her ability to rally the people on her side and pull off another victory. Her team recently published a campaign video to articulate her side of the story. Everyone deserves a chance to make their case, so lets take a look shall we....
#wtf was that? why? Winston Churchill? Is Brampton "hell"? Hahaha, I cant even right now. Sublimely produced garbage...are you going to fall for it?
to be continued......
